Workplace Fatigue: It’s Time to Act on Insight, Not Hindsight

Neil Clark, Founder and CEO of IHF, explains how biometric data can shift fatigue risk management from hindsight to insight and ultimately foresight — helping organisations look through the windshield rather than relying on the rear-view mirror.
“If we are always looking backwards, we are always one step behind the risk.”

In a recent conversation with a potential BaselineNC™ client, the pros and cons of using camera-based systems to detect fatigue were discussed. And during that conversation, the client introduced the rear-view mirror analogy in that you would never drive a car going forwards using your rear-view mirror to navigate.

Similarly, the discussion progressed to the signs, symptoms and cues that cameras pick up on to detect fatigue and that these can be so close to the fatigue event — or the moment of inattention — that they might as well be in the rear-view mirror.
Because BaselineNC uses biometric data collection, analysis and forecasting it is far more analogous to looking out your windshield — in the direction you are going — to predict fatigue from a data-driven perspective.

So, you can see what is coming, you can see the turns in the road and you can see the hazards that are coming your way in plenty of time to do something about them.

Reactive alerts should be the last line of defense against this silent, ever-present risk.

Hindsight can tell you what happened.

Insight can help you understand what is happening and why.

Foresight enables you to anticipate what might happen next — and act before it does.
